Fun at a Wedding Money Dance

Posted in Funny, and Wedding Ideas and Info

Different cultures celebrate different versions of the wedding money dance. At the Armenian couple’s wedding several guests tossed bunches of dollar bills over the bride and groom as they danced. Parents, relatives and friends all participated. A few young children had fun with it and kept picking up handfuls of dollars so they could throw them to again rain down on the wedding couple.

Wedding Disasters Turning Into Wedding Fun

Posted in Funny

I’ve been the wedding officiant for many LA weddings. Sometimes weddings don’t go the way that you think they should. Wedding disasters happen. I have seen several. A sense of humor makes it much more of a wonderful memory than an angry one. I recommend that all brides and grooms have the same sort of attitude that this bride and groom do. I can’t stop laughing when I watch this wedding video.     There. Didn’t that make you feel better? Maybe the grooms gift should have been a belt?   If you are getting married in LA, give me…

Gay Marriage in California is Now a Reality

Posted in Easy Weddings, and Marriage Ceremonies

Yes! Gay marriage in California is now a reality. I have just been informed minutes ago that I can now issue Los Angeles County marriage licenses for gay weddings and officiate those same-sex marriages in California. I am very happy to announce that and am thrilled that the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals lifted the stay on this long overdue ruling. Not only did the Ninth Circuit quickly lift the stay on their ruling, but the Governor of California and the County Clerk’s office kicked into gear immediately. Gay marriage is official and legal.

Same Sex Marriage in California is Here to Stay

Posted in Marriage Ceremonies, and Marriage License

I was quite happy to learn this morning that the United States Supreme Court held that the lower court’s ruling will stand and that same sex marriage will again be permitted in California. There are two reasons that I am pleased with today’s decisions.  First, I strongly believe that all people, no matter their sexual orientation, race, religion or any other factors should enjoy the same rights.  Second, I have found that same sex weddings are some the most heartwarming and emotional that I have the honor to officiate. I do not mean that gay couples or lesbian couples share…

I Heard a Funny Joke after an LA Wedding Ceremony

Posted in Marriage Ceremonies, Wedding Officiants, and Wedding Style

After I officiated an LA wedding ceremony last weekend I heard a joke a that made laugh.  As a busy LA wedding minister, people love to tell me wedding and wedding minister jokes.  Some of the jokes are very funny and some are pretty corny.  In the latter case, I have learned to give a polite chuckle and move on. After I officiated a wedding in LA last weekend I heard an old joke that I’ve heard before but it still made me laugh: A priest was taking an evening walk when he took a wrong turn and found himself…

Groom and Bride? Or Bride and Groom?

Posted in Marriage Ceremonies, and Wedding Etiquette

As a wedding officiant I sometimes have to be the voice of diplomacy. I received the wording of a wedding ceremony from a groom yesterday via email and he titled the ceremony (made up names) “Jim and Jackie – June 1, 2013” and asked if it looked OK. I knew the groom had a sense of humor so I emailed back that it looked fine but that I will be titling it “Jackie and Jim – June 1 2013”. The groom emailed back simply “?”. I replied, “Talk to Jackie”.   I have been married over twenty years so I know…

Fun “Great Gatsby” Themed Wedding

Posted in Los Angeles Wedding Location Ideas, Marriage Ceremonies, Wedding Ideas and Info, Wedding Officiants, Wedding Places, and Wedding Style

Yesterday I had the honor of being the wedding officiant at the marriage ceremony of Ana and John at a fun venue near the Los Angeles Airport called the Proud Bird.  The Proud Bird has an airplane theme and several old military jets decorate the parking lot and the lawns surrounding the restaurant. Ana and John decided to have some fun with their wedding so they chose a Great Gatsby wedding theme for their marriage ceremony.  The bride and groom dressed in vintage 1920’s era clothes and most of their guests did the same.   Ana and her three sisters…

This Wedding Officiant Reads Some Beautiful Words

Posted in Destination Weddings, Easy Weddings, Elope in Los Angeles, Marriage Ceremonies, Wedding Ideas and Info, Wedding Officiants, and Wedding Style

As a Los Angeles wedding officiant I get to meet people from all over the world on one of the happiest days of their life. Last weekend I had the pleasure to officiate an intimate private wedding for a young British couple who decided to elope while they were visiting Los Angeles. At the conclusion of their wedding ceremony they asked me to read a passage from “The House at Pooh Corner” by A.A. Milne.

Small Weddings Can be Fun and Creative

Posted in Easy Weddings, and Wedding Officiants

One of the best things about being a very busy wedding officiant in Los Angeles is that I get to meet people from all over the world to participate in a very intimate occasion. Many couples get very creative with their ceremony of marriage. And the smaller the wedding the more unique and creative the bride and groom can be.

Ideas for Wedding Favors

Posted in Wedding Ideas and Info, and Wedding Style

If you are getting married, I’m sure that you are looking for ideas for wedding favors. Many wedding couple’s give their guests a gift or a memento of their wedding.  Some are very hip and useful.  Some are kitschy and cheesy.  Some are just plain weird.  I’ve seen a fascinating variety of wedding souvenirs.  I never considered how many ways there are to put two names or sets of initials on a generic item. One of the softest towels in my house was part of a beach bag of gifts given to the guests of a wedding on Santa Monica…

Airport Elopement Ceremony

Posted in Destination Weddings, Easy Weddings, and Elope in Los Angeles

I married a couple on St. Patrick’s Day in an elopement ceremony in the Encounter Restaurant at LAX. I’ve performed many airport marriages in the past which is a unique kind of destination wedding. In fact, USA Today wrote a story about me and airport marriages. They flew in the morning, ate lunch, and met me at the funky-retro restaurant which feels like a Star Trek set. We completed the wedding licence and did a quick civil ceremony while sitting at a four-top table. The wedding couple planned to be getting married in Tahiti. Those plans fell through but they…

Don’t Wait, Get Married

Posted in Easy Weddings, Marriage Ceremonies, and Marriage License

As a minister for weddings in the Los Angeles area, I’ve seen so much frustration and sorrow when a couple hopes, at the last possible moment, to get married. Too often I have had to deny such sincere requests for a marriage ceremony because one of the hopeful spouses does not have the required frame of mind or mental capacity to enter into marriage. It is my legal duty to make that call. I have a piece of advice for everyone living together:  If you have found your soul mate, marry that person. If you feel that level of affection for someone…

I am a Wedding Minister for Deathbed Weddings

Posted in Marriage Ceremonies, Marriage License, and Wedding Officiants

There are very sad moments in my otherwise happy career.  At a death bed wedding the joy of true love and the immense pain of love lost collide.  I’ve been a wedding minister now for many years and some of my most memorable moments as a wedding minister have been at death bed weddings. A young groom in his early twenties escorted me to the hospital entrance after I solemnized his marriage ceremony to his high school sweetheart. The bride was in the last stages of cancer that would very soon take her life. Sobbing, the groom thanked me profusely…

Wedding Officiant for Bedside Hospital Weddings

Posted in Marriage Ceremonies, and Marriage License

When I became a wedding officiant I never expected to officiate bedside weddings. Bedside weddings typically join a couple who have been with each other for a significant period of time and had vague plans to get married but sudden health issues require an immediate marriage ceremony. It is often a very bittersweet experience. Bedside hospital weddings occur in various situations. A bride or groom may be about to have surgery with uncertain results and they want to get married beforehand in case the surgery is unsuccessful. A couple’s health situation may simply require united insurance coverage that can only…

Oops! I Think I Just Swallowed a Fly.

Posted in Chris

As we wedding officiants have found, anything can happen at a wedding.  Sometimes it is funny, sometimes it is frustrating but it is almost always unpredictable and memorable.  Whether it is a couple who decides to consummate their marriage vows before I depart their private elopement ceremony or a bride’s sister who gives a peep show to me throughout the wedding ceremony, anything goes.  As a busy wedding officiant, I am proud to say that it is the very rare occasion that a hitch in the many marriage ceremonies I have the honor to officiate is caused by me. One…

Be Prepared

Posted in Chris, Wedding Etiquette, Wedding Ideas and Info, and Wedding Officiants

Simply Bridal has some great tips for your wedding ceremony day so you and your bridesmaids and groomsmen will not be caught unprepared at your wedding ceremony. Some of their suggestions, like water, are very appropriate for summer weddings and outdoor marriage ceremonies, especially if you are getting married in Southern California during the summer. Ironically, one of their suggestions, alcohol, often causes the need for some of the others (eye drops, painkillers, spot remover, breath mints). Most do not apply if a couple has opted for marriage in the nude which I have encountered a few times as a wedding officiant.

Confidential Marriage License vs Public Marriage License

Posted in Easy Weddings, and Marriage License

I’d like to clarify some misconceptions about a Confidential Marriage License vs. a Public Marriage License. Many people I talk to think that the Confidential Marriage License is not a valid license, but that is not the case. The only thing that a Confidential Marriage License does it protect your marriage license information rom public view. As it is right now, ANYONE can view your personal information on a Public Marriage License and the county has the ability to sell that information to database companies. Go to my marriage license page on my main website and view what information that someone…

Officiant: What Is It And How Do You Pronounce It?

An officiant is one of the number of individuals who can legally perform a marriage ceremony for a wedding couple. The legal term for the performing of a marriage ceremony is “solemnization”. Thus, an officiant can “solemnize”your marriage.

Wedding Etiquette from a Wedding Officiant Who Has Seen Everything

Posted in Easy Weddings, Wedding Etiquette, and Wedding Ideas and Info

Being a wedding officiant in Los Angeles for many years I have seen it all, and I mean ALL. At a recent wedding where I was the wedding officiant, the groom and I were standing at the altar as the wedding procession began. We were told by the “sound guy” that the microphone was turned off until the bride and her father arrived at the altar. The bride’s mother and her escort led the procession and as his soon-to-be mother-in-law approached the groom leaned toward me and whispered “She’s been a total b_tch today”. Little did he know that the…

Hugh Hefner Wedding Officiant at the Playboy Mansion

Posted in Celebrity Weddings, Wedding Officiants, and Wedding Style

On New Years Eve I had honor to be the wedding officiant for Hugh Hefner and his beautiful bride, Crystal Harris, at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles.   What a blast that was. Crystal was beautiful in her light pink wedding dress and Hef, uncharacteristically, wore a tuxedo instead of his silk pajamas.  It was nice to see Hef’s brother, Keith, and his lovely wife, Caya, as it was just a few months ago that I was their wedding officiant on the lawn of the Playboy Mansion.  Keith was Hef’s best man and Mary O’Connor, Hef’s assistant for over four decades…

Los Angeles Beach Weddings Rules and Permits in Los Angeles County

Posted in Beach Weddings, Destination Weddings, Easy Weddings, and Wedding Places

LA Beach Weddings Many people who have a beach wedding in Los Angeles County forget that the beach is a public place (aside from Malibu’s private beaches) and governed by Los Angeles County rules, as well as the individual city rules. It’s important to know what the beach wedding rules are in order to have an outdoor wedding on the beach in Southern California. You simply cannot just put down a canopy and chairs right next to the sunbathers on the beach to get married. Unless it’s Santa Monica, 50 people or more or large props or a significant number…

Wedding Dogs

Posted in Wedding Ideas and Info, and Wedding Style

It is a great wedding idea for many couples to include their children in their wedding ceremonies. But for dog lovers, their “children” are their dogs. And so, of course, this kind of wedding couple will tend to include them in the wedding. I’ve officiating many weddings where the wedding dogs are either a best man, a greeter, a ring bearer or just plain hanging out. It’s very sweet and humorous to see a dog in a tuxedo.

Wedding Cupcakes for Beach Weddings

Posted in Beach Weddings, and Wedding Ideas and Info

At a recent Malibu wedding that would have been a beach wedding had the weather behaved, the bride and groom, a couple of beach lovers, took a whimsical approach and made wedding cupcakes for their guests. This is a wedding cake trend that is lots of fun and very casual. I love the nicknames that they chose for the wedding cupcakes. Here’s to a long and happy life for “Gidget” and “Moondoggie”.
