There are two types of marriage licenses in California:
- Public Marriage License
- Confidential Marriage License
And there are two ways that the wedding license can be issued:
- County Clerk Recorder
- Authorized notary in particular counties
Public Marriage License
The public marriage license is open to the public, and therefore, anyone can see your personal information which includes the date of your marriage, your address, and your parents’ information. Take a look on this page to see what marriage license information is necessary. Why anyone would want the public to have access to their info is beyond me. Think: the media, stalkers, identity thieves, and telemarketers. See what I’m saying? The cost of the loss of privacy is $92 as of 2017 (If you’re reading this later than that, it’s probably more money.)
California Confidential Marriage License
The California confidential marriage license is one of a kind in this country. You can only get it in California. It seals your private information from the public so that nobody can access that information without a court order. The cost of a Los Angeles County confidential marriage license is $85 in 2017. Cheaper and infinitely more private.
The Hard Way
You can choose to drive to one of the few County Clerk’s offices during working hours Monday thru Friday, find a place to park, deal with finding the marriage license office, wait in line, fill out the paperwork, then wait in line again, wait for the license to be processed and typed out, and pay the fee. Or you can hire me.
The Easy Way
Los Angeles County is one of the few counties that authorize specially trained notaries to purchase marriage licenses and then issue them on their behalf. It is filed with the LA County Clerk Recorder, but now, with recent law changes, it can be issued to anyone getting married anywhere in California. For an extra fee, I can do all that waiting for you, drive to where you are on any day of the week, at any hour and, at your convenience, issue you a marriage license. Also, it’s private. I can also officiate a private wedding ceremony so nobody will ever know. I’ve had the great honor to issue marriage licenses and officiate marriages to many celebrities in complete privacy and utter confidentiality (don’t ask me who). I can only issue an LA County confidential marriage license, but that’s a win-win: privacy and ease. The choice is obvious.
