How Much Does a Marriage License Cost in Los Angeles, California?

So you need a marriage license in Los Angeles? And you want to know how much a marriage license costs? You have a few options, which is great.

There are two types of marriage licenses in California:

1. Public Marriage License
2. Confidential Marriage License

And there are two ways that the wedding license can be issued:

1. County Clerk Recorder
2. Authorized notary in particular counties

Public Marriage License

The public marriage license is open to the public, and therefore, anyone can see your personal information which includes the date of your marriage, your address, and your parents’ information. Think: the media, stalkers, identity thieves, and telemarketers. See what I’m saying? The cost of the loss of privacy is $92 as of 2017 (If you’re reading this later than that, it’s probably more money.)

California Confidential Marriage License

The California confidential marriage license is one of a kind in this country. You can only get it in California. It seals your private information from the public so that nobody can access that information without a court order. The cost of a Los Angeles County confidential marriage license is $85 in 2023. Cheaper and infinitely more private.

The Hard Way

You can choose to drive to one of the few County Clerk’s offices during working hours Monday thru Friday, find a place to park, deal with finding the marriage license office, wait in line, fill out the paperwork, then wait in line again, wait for the license to be processed and typed out, and pay the fee. Or you can hire me.

The Easy Way

Los Angeles County is one of the few counties that authorize specially trained notaries to purchase marriage licenses and then issue them on their behalf.
