I am am honored to be one of Southern California’s most popular wedding officiants.\u00a0 Some of the most common questions I get from people who contact me are “What is a wedding officiant?” and “Officiant?\u00a0 How do I pronounce that?”<\/p>\n

An officiant is one of the number of individuals who can legally perform a marriage ceremony for a wedding couple. The legal term for the performing of a marriage ceremony is “solemnization”.\u00a0 Thus, an officiant can “solemnize”your marriage.<\/p>\n

An officiant<\/a> is best defined by Wikipedia:
\nA Marriage officiant<\/b> is a civil officer who performs acts of marriage, civil union or commitment.\u00a0 His or her main responsibility is to receive and witness the consent of the intended spouses and to ensure the legal formalities, and hence the validity of the marriage or civil union, are observed.<\/p>\n

How do you pronounce “Officiant”?\u00a0 It is pronounced the same as “efficient” but with an “uh” at the beginning instead of “e”.\u00a0 Although it is commonly pronounced with an “o” at the beginning.\u00a0 Also you, pronounce the “i” in officiant unlike the “i” in efficient. \u00a0 Fortunately, I am an a very efficient officiant.<\/p>\n

Under California law, an officiant<\/strong><\/a> is one of several person who can solemnize a marriage.\u00a0 California Family Code 400\u00a0 provides that a marriage may be solemnized by any of the following who is 18 years of age or older:<\/p>\n

(a) A priest, minister, rabbi, or authorized person of any religious denomination.<\/p>\n

(b) A judge or retired judge, commissioner of civil marriages or retired commissioner of civil marriages, commissioner or retired commissioner, or assistant commissioner of a court of record in this state.<\/p>\n

(c) A judge or magistrate who has resigned from office.<\/p>\n

(d) Any active or retired judges or magistrates of the United States Supreme Court, court of appeals, a district court, bankruptcy court or\u00a0 tax court.<\/p>\n

(e) A legislator or constitutional officer of this state or a Member of Congress who represents a district within this state, while that person holds office.<\/p>\n
